JD Vance says that Kamala Harris is a “childless cat lady” who is “miserable” with her life because she didn’t have children, and that not having children means that she doesn’t have “a direct stake” in America. Story. https://t.co/EbOQzT7lXC
Toronto sits in a basin surrounded by the Greenbelt, a system of woods and wetlands that perform a crucial role of absorbing water. The Ontario government recently voted to open them up to development, paving them over, giving rainfall nowhere to go.
It's only gonna get worse.
The Ontario government's plans to pave huge swathes of the headwaters of the Humber River, Don River, Rouge and Carruthers Creek will lead to flash floods that make today's #OnStorm flooding in Toronto look like minor dampness by comparison.
Make no mistake: the flooding we see in the city today is no surprise. It is an outcome of politicians taking a very very very shortsighted view of infrastructure planning and investment.
Take a look at this vote from 2018 requesting an increase in stormwater infrastructure spending. It failed.
Disinvestment in the city leads to the mess you saw today. Same with traffic congestion. Both are an outcome of a broken approach to municipal infrastructure financing - and a lack of leadership.
Every politician who voted no to this - and many more similar votes that were about necessary reinvestment - should be held to account.
They made this mess. This is entirely solvable. We even know *how* to solve it and we have the plans to solve it. But politicians refuse to fund it. Now we will waste billions cleaning up the mess.
To those arguing today's rain has nothing to do with climate change: the Doug Ford gov't conducted the first Ontario-wide climate study and found extreme precipitation is going to become more extreme and, without climate action, have devastating impacts.

Bans on sprawl are meant to prevent the paving of river headwaters that causes this flash flooding.
If we don't #StopSprawl & #Stop413, today's #OnStorm flooding in #Toronto will look trivial by comparison with what's "normal" 30 years from now.

@RoyStanfield One of the tips when I was training my puppy (and i hear this tip for kids too) - they won't hear the "do not" part and only hear the "remove card" part. So your commands should always be about the action you want, rather than the one you don't want. 🤔
It makes me furious that @fordnation can publish an interactive map to find beer after just one weekend but he won’t do the same thing to help any of the 2.3 million Ontarians who can’t find a family doctor.

Craig & I wondered if can put together a ex-Shopify collective to raise funds.
We will happily contribute up to 1 million dollars if it means the science centre remains where it is permanently.
@adammcnamara@LorenPadelford@aratisharma@skanwar
Reminder: @fordnation happy to spend:
*$1 BILLION in taxpayer money to end Beer Store contract early.
*Therme got $1 BILLION and a 95 yr lease.
*Agency nurses?💰
Repairing an iconic #Ontario Moriyama building for $500 Million? ($43M roof)
Should be no-brainer YES!
@SabiVM
Adam McNamara will send the Ontario Science Centre the $522,500 required to keep it open for 2024. All those summer children’s programs will not need to be cancelled/relocated. All those staff won’t be laid off or displaced at the 11th hour.
I’m retweeting this because I would like to see this happen. (And I know Adam, and I know he is serious.)
Would you like to see this happen?
The Ontario government is shutting the Science Centre today citing an engineer’s report – which does *not* say the place must close or that all work is urgent. What a betrayal.
