In the summer of โ69, John Bishop sketched what would become the first IMSA logo โ drawn and painted by his own hand (complete with an accidental drop of water on the โIโ). Bishop explored multiple versions โ horizontal, vertical, square, and in different colors โ before settling on the iconic arrow/apex design.ย An industrial designer by trade and a highly regarded motorsports artist, he also created artwork for the SCCA magazine, standalone paintings, and even a book of sketches often done during staff meetings and OEM boardroom visits. The original logo artwork now lives in the International Motor Racing Research Center archives in Watkins Glen, NY.
That same year, IMSA sanctioned its first race: October 1969 at Pocono International Raceway, using the short 1/8-mile oval on the front-straight grass for Formula Ford open-wheel cars. The event program cover โ likely influenced by Bishop as well โ also resides in the IMRRC archive. From late โ69 through 1971, IMSA ran professional Formula Ford and Formula Vee races on short ovals and eventually at Daytona and Talladega, before launching its first radial sedan and GT race in 1971.

@danjziegler@SFGarrett@TexasTechFB@sggarrett People have died at outdoor sporting events due to lightning. No life is worth risking for a football game, so these rules are in place for a reason.
