He waited 12 years and 8,000 first-class runs for this moment, and it only came because someone else got injured. Then he made 188. He only got in because of an unexpected injury to Pathum Nissanka. This was Lahiru udara first Test in almost a year, though you would never have guessed it. Not a nervous, scratchy hundred either. 188 runs off 248 balls against West Indies in the 2nd Test.

At 32 years and 8 months, he became one of the oldest Sri Lankans ever to score a maiden Test hundred, sitting just behind Chaminda Vaas, who did it at 33.

Udara has always been an aggressive, free-flowing opener, and in this innings he broke the record for the most sixes in a Test innings by a Sri Lankan opening batter. The record he broke belonged to Sanath Jayasuriya.
