Conducted in collaboration with researchers from Marwadi University, India, the study addresses a critical challenge in geotechnical engineering—the accurate prediction of expansive soil behaviour. These soils swell when exposed to moisture and shrink upon drying, often causing severe damage to buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.
Using an extensive database of geotechnical properties, the research evaluated Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Ridge Regression, and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) model to predict soil swelling potential. The findings revealed that LASSO achieved the highest predictive accuracy (R² = 0.935), outperforming conventional approaches through its ability to identify the most influential soil parameters while reducing the impact of irrelevant variables.
Beyond advancing scientific understanding, the research offers a practical pathway towards faster, more cost-effective, and reliable infrastructure planning, reducing dependence on lengthy laboratory testing and enhancing public safety in expansive soil regions worldwide.

The study investigates nearly four decades (1984–2021) of rainfall and surface-water data across nine regions of Bihar, uncovering how climate variability is reshaping water availability and monsoon behaviour. Using advanced statistical techniques, the research reveals pronounced regional differences, with northern zones such as Darbhanga, Kosi and Tirhut experiencing greater rainfall variability and flood susceptibility, while southern regions, including Magadh, Bhagalpur and Patna show comparatively stable but often declining water resources.

This work provides a scientific foundation for strengthening flood preparedness, drought resilience, and sustainable water governance in one of India's most climate-sensitive regions.
