A small defect in an electrode or separator can become a much costlier problem once it moves downstream. 🔋

That's why our team will be at The Battery Show India next week, discussing how battery manufacturers can identify defects earlier, improve traceability, and gain greater visibility into quality throughout the battery manufacturing process.

By using surface inspection and process monitoring technologies, manufacturers can detect, classify, and track defects across electrodes, separators and other battery components, allowing them to understand where quality issues originate and take corrective action sooner.

Can aluminum producers achieve sustainability goals without compromising quality?

As pressure grows to reduce environmental impact, increasing use of recycled aluminum and material security concerns are reshaping the production landscape.

Maintaining consistent quality as materials and processes evolve can be challenging.

A wide range of factors can affect the finished aluminum surface, from casting and rolling conditions to equipment performance, handling, coating and finishing.

Common issues include:
•Scratches and roll marks
•Inclusions and surface contamination
•Stains and coating irregularities
•Holes, cracks and edge defects
•Variations in texture or surface appearance

The key is understanding the impact of each defect on the finished product, so producers can take appropriate action without unnecessary disruption.

We asked battery manufacturers what will be most important as scrutiny around quality and accountability continues to grow.

63% chose battery traceability. 🔋

With battery passport requirements fast approaching and greater emphasis being placed on product accountability, it's easy to see why traceability topped the poll.

Manufacturers increasingly need access to detailed quality data and the ability to understand the quality journey behind every cell.

Our surface inspection technologies support this by detecting and classifying defects in real-time, while linking inspection data to individual battery components.

If a defect is identified, traceability allows manufacturers to understand what happened, which products were affected, and where corrective action may be needed.

As battery components move through the production line, their quality data is then linked to the final product. This creates a digital record for the battery, allowing manufacturers to demonstrate quality, accountability and traceability for every cell they produce.

Last week at the AIST Sheet Processing and Finishing Lines Practical Training Seminar in Charleston, SC, Jacqueline shared insights into the fundamentals of automated surface inspection and its application across sheet processing and finishing operations.

The session explored how inspection strategies are shaped by the application itself. Topics included the role of illumination and imaging setup in continuous surface inspection, as well as applications beyond the strip, including edge inspection and blank inspection.

Using real-world examples from sheet processing and finishing operations, the discussion demonstrated how inspection results synchronized with process-monitoring data can support root cause analysis.

One key takeaway: effective inspection starts with understanding the material, the process, and the quality objective.

How are you using inspection data today: primarily for quality verification, process improvement, or both?

For many manufacturers, the blanking process remains one of the most challenging areas for quality control.

While surface inspection is widely used upstream, blanking operations often still rely on manual quality checks.

This approach cannot keep pace with modern line speeds and consistency requirements, increasing the risk of defects reaching downstream processes, resulting in additional waste, scrap, and costs.

Our advanced surface inspection solutions are built for the unique challenges of blank production, featuring:

✅ Multi-view imaging for comprehensive inspection coverage

✅ Adaptive lighting techniques, including blue and UV light

✅ Geometry-aware inspection for varying shapes and positions

✅ Real-time defect detection to support immediate corrective action

What caused the defect?

Where did it first appear?

Is it an isolated defect or part of a wider process issue?

These were some of the questions explored by Alex Bartlett during his presentation at the Galvanizers Association Annual Conference this week.

Drawing on practical galvanizing examples, he discussed how modern surface inspection systems help galvanizers improve defect visibility, evaluate surface conditions more consistently, and strengthen process investigations by linking inspection data with process observations.

Thank you to everyone who attended the session and joined the discussion!

Galvanized and galvannealed surfaces present a demanding optical inspection environment.

Surface reflectivity, coating texture, strip vibration, product variation, and defect scale can all influence defect visibility and inspection performance.

At the Galvanizers Association 2026 Annual Conference, Alex will present on 'Advancing Surface Inspection for Improved Quality and Process Transparency.'

Through practical galvanizing examples, his presentation will explore how our approach to surface inspection helps galvanizers improve defect visibility, evaluate surface conditions more consistently, and strengthen process investigations.

The purpose of a pickling line isn't just to remove scale. It's to deliver a clean steel surface that's ready for downstream processes.

But how do you verify the result?

✅ Has all the scale been removed?

✅Have defects from upstream processes now become visible?

✅ Or has pickling introduced new imperfections?

These aren't questions most steel producers want answered after the material has moved on to cold rolling, galvanizing, coating, or other downstream processes where additional value has already been added.

With automated surface inspection continuously monitoring the strip as it leaves the pickling line, these questions can be answered before material moves downstream.

Our solutions detect surface defects early while providing valuable feedback on pickling line performance, helping producers identify process issues such as acid concentration problems, rinse performance issues, dryer faults, and worn rolls before they impact product quality or lead to unnecessary scrap.

Message us to discuss how automated surface inspection can verify steel quality before material moves downstream.

In the automotive industry, quality is everything. ✅

From safety-critical components to flawless surface finishes, every blank you deliver has a direct impact on downstream manufacturing, product performance, and customer satisfaction.

When coils enter your blanking operation, you inherit the quality of the incoming material, but you also assume responsibility for the quality of every blank that leaves your line.

During blanking, edge damage, handling marks, surface deformation, and process-related defects can occur, introducing quality risks that may not have been present or visible during earlier production stages.

Our surface inspection solutions combine multi-view imaging, adaptive lighting, and geometry-aware inspection to assess every blank, regardless of shape, position, or orientation.

By enabling real-time quality verification on high-speed production lines, manufacturers can identify defects earlier, take corrective action faster, and consistently deliver the high-quality blanks demanded by the automotive industry.

Pickling removes the oxide scale left behind by casting, hot rolling, and coil handling processes, revealing the true condition of the steel surface beneath.

The question is: has your pickling process delivered a clean, defect-free surface that's ready for downstream processes?

Once the steel leaves the rinse and drying sections, automated surface inspection reveals defects that were previously concealed by scale and identifies any new defects introduced during pickling.

Detecting defects such as residual scale, under-pickling, over-pickling, pits, and gouges after pickling ensures imperfections are identified before downstream processes add further value to the material, where the cost of correction increases significantly.

How confident are you in the material leaving your pickling line? Message us to learn more about our automated surface inspection solutions.
