To be paid and credited for scientific work as a woman in the 1880s, financially supporting her mother and sisters, and leaving behind a wealth of stunning and accurate entomological images that are still relevant today.🐞

Maud worked for years as an entomological illustrator to support her family. 🐞🪲

Her sister, Ann, also undertook some botany mounting work for the Museum - another job like illustration that was considered suitably feminine for a woman. 🌿

Maud’s contributions go further than just science - they were also vital at home.

In an 1879 letter Maud writes “Our means being very small, myself and my sisters are trying to help our mother...we have been looking forward to the colouring as a means of subsistence.”

Let’s start with what we do know.

Maud was hired by the Natural History Museum in 1879 as a scientific illustrator and lithographer. 🎨

She went on to create hundreds of beautiful and anatomically identifiable images - an important skill before printing photos was feasible.

Meet Maud Horman-Fisher.

We don’t know what she looks like, or very much about her life. ❓

Still - we’d like to turn the spotlight on this former employee this #InternationalWomensDay, for a few particular reasons.

After five trips over 3 weekends and around 15 hours searching and seeing nothing but flybys I finally bumped into this gorgeous female Brown Hairstreak on Bookham Common last weekend. @BC_Surrey @savebutterflies @southeastNT
