A Class 9 moment changed her life forever. Standing in a queue for donated books at a government school in Bengaluru, S G Susheelamma made herself a quiet promise: “One day, I’ll be the one giving.”
Years later, with just ₹15 in hand, one friend beside her, and three children to care for, she started Sumangali Seva Ashrama in 1975. Today, that one small step has transformed thousands of lives.
From educating orphaned children and empowering women to running health centres, shelters, literacy programmes, and tribal welfare initiatives, Susheelamma spent nearly five decades proving that service doesn’t begin with wealth, it begins with intent.
Now, the woman fondly called Karnataka’s “Mother Teresa” has been honoured with the Padma Shri.
And somehow, it feels like that little girl from Class 9 finally completed the promise she made to herself.❤️
