Puppy Kisses Can Transmit Parasites to Humans

Humans can acquire toxocariasis, a parasitic infection caused by the roundworm Toxocara canis, from kissing or being licked by puppies. Puppies often carry these worms and shed microscopic eggs in their feces, which can contaminate their fur, mouth, or saliva. When a person’s face or lips come into contact with these eggs, they may be accidentally ingested, allowing larvae to migrate through the body and cause visceral larva migrans (affecting organs) or ocular larva migrans (potential blindness). Other parasites like hookworms and Giardia may also spread through saliva, though less commonly. Young puppies pose the highest risk because nearly all are infected unless regularly dewormed. Proper hygiene—washing hands after handling pets, keeping puppies dewormed, and avoiding face-licking—prevents infection. While often ignored by mainstream sources, toxocariasis is widespread and underdiagnosed, capable of causing chronic inflammation, allergic symptoms, or visual damage even in developed countries.
