At 75, Harminder Singh picks up bricks and starts filling it.

The retired banker from Ludhiana was tired of watching people risk accidents on broken roads every day. So instead of waiting for repairs, he stepped out with construction debris, broken tiles, and one simple goal: make the road a little safer.

For the past 15 days, he has been repairing potholes across Model Town, Pakhowal Road, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, and nearby areas, often asking residents for discarded material he can use to level dangerous craters.

What makes his story powerful is not just his age. It is the fact that while many complain about problems, he chose to become part of the solution.

A man who once walked kilometres just to read a single book… has now opened the doors to over 20 lakh books for the world.

79-year-old Anke Gowda from Karnataka has been awarded the Padma Shri 2026 for building one of India’s largest free-access libraries.

Born into a farming family, Gowda grew up in a village where books were rare. As a student, he travelled long distances to Mysuru just to study. Seeing rural children struggle without access to books stayed with him forever.

So while working as a bus conductor, sugar factory employee, milk seller, and insurance agent, he quietly kept buying books.

He spent most of his salary on them.
He even sold belongings to make space for them.

Over decades, that dream became Pustak Mane, a library with nearly two million books, rare manuscripts, dictionaries, and research material in over 20 languages.

Today, students, teachers, researchers, and UPSC aspirants visit from across Karnataka.

Gowda, his wife Vijayalakshmi, and son Sagar still live inside the library itself, protecting a dream built so no child is denied knowledge because of poverty.

The young boy was studying at Presidency College as an Honors student in Mathematics. However, during his college days, he became deeply involved in active leftist politics alongside round the clock literary pursuits. As a result, he failed his college exams twice in a row. When the news reached his elder brother, he was furious about his younger brother's political involvement. He wrote in a letter: "You were sent there to study. Give an explanation as to why you failed."
​The boy replied to his brother that it was impossible for him to give up reading, writing stories and novels, or politics. His brother wrote back: "It is not possible for me to send you money to fund your literary pursuits." In response, the boy wrote to his brother: "You will see, in time, my writings will place me in the top tier of Bengali writers. My name will be announced alongside Rabindranath and Saratchandra."
And yes.. his prophecy about himself came true.

​Throughout his life, he fought a constant battle against poverty. He would often say: "Look, no one should pursue literature in Bengal without securing enough for two square meals a day." He also suffered from epilepsy. Even with a weakened body, he fought through the pain with gritted teeth, battling both his illness and extreme poverty.
​To escape the agonizing pain of his illness, he turned to excessive drinking. That alcoholism and poverty haunted him until the very end.
​He lived for only 48 years. Yet, in that short life span of 48 years, he left behind 40 novels and 300 short stories. The promise he had made to his elder brother came true. He remains one of the greatest literary figures of all time in Bengali literature.
​He is Manik Bandyopadhyay. Within a short life span of 48 years, he left behind an immortal legacy that will endure for ages.
On his birth anniversary let's remember Manik Bandopadhyay.

Shouldn't the administration have arranged for rehabilitation first? I do not support illegal encroachment, but what will be the future of more than 150 families? Why is this eviction drive not being carried out by giving prior notice and sufficient time? Eviction drives are currently underway across many stations in West Bengal, including Sealdah and Howrah!
​This video shows that the railway administration recently conducted a major eviction drive to make the Howrah station area congestion-free and clean. Hundreds of temporary shops near the Ganga Ghat and the bus stand have been removed. According to the administration, this step was essential for the convenience of daily commuters.
​However, a harsh reality emerges on the other side. Due to this sudden eviction without any alternative arrangement or rehabilitation, 150 small traders have lost their livelihoods overnight. Their question is— "The law is right, but what will happen to our families?"
