The foreign ministers of #EuropeanUnion member states and representatives of the #EU leadership have established a Special #Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression Against #Ukraine.

According to Reuters, on May 9, foreign ministers from the so-called “core group” of at least 37 countries signed the #Lviv Statement, a document marking the conclusion of work on drafting the necessary legal instruments for the tribunal.

The tribunal will be formalised soon within the Council of #Europe and could begin operating next year. It will be based in The #Hague and will have the authority to hold #Russia’s political and military leadership accountable for the crime of aggression.

Members of the Core Group gathered in Strasbourg on 19-21 March for the 14th and final meeting.

The legal experts of the Core Group finalized the technical work on three draft documents necessary for the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

These documents will now be submitted for political consideration.

This achievement followed more than two years of dedicated work and in-depth discussion of the Core Group.
