Hey, you Bollywood Buffs! Over the past few years we’ve seen an increase in Bollywood movies which focus around a sport or sportspersons. Some of them inspired by true events and some of them fiction.
Apart from the sportswomen, other women in the profession such as doctors, journalists and managers are also not given their due respect and position because it is a common misconception that sports is something that can only be understood by men. (14/)
Simply said, women are supposed to be 'grateful' of even being given the chance of to play. So they should just shut up and stop complaining about little, trivial things. (13/)
Another major factor is that women's sports all over the world, and especially in India, aren’t given much importance. This creates an imbalance in the position female players have and the position male players hold. (12/)
Sports being a very testosterone-driven field, is one of the major grounds for sexual assault and it is just as easy to muffle the rising voices here as women are in a minority and are considered inconsequential. (11/)
There are very few times when powerful people had to face the consequences and the times it happened was not a very good lesson towards those who were still doing it. (10/)
These are just three cases. Ranging from before the movement caught on to now, when it is at its peak. And nothing has changed. People in the position of power have always felt entitled that they can do whatever they feel like without facing the consequences and that is true.(9/)
3.Rahul Johri: The CEO of BCCI was accused of sexual assault by a female author in the MeToo movement in cricket. He was accused of taking advantage of the victim by offering a job opportunity. He was given a clean chit, and no action was taken against him by BCCI. (8/)
2.V. Chamundeswaranath: He was the then chairman of Andhra Cricket Association and in 2009 was accused of sexually harassing female players, asking for sexual favours and sending lewd messages to them. He is now the Vice Pres. of the Telangana Badminton Association. (7/)
up the pandora’s box of sexual assault in the sports world. He was sentenced to jail for 60 years for possessing child pornography amongst other charges. (6/)
1.Larry Nassar: An ex-doctor for the U.S. Gymnasts was accused of sexual misconduct by 265 women, both adults and minors, throughout his career. His victims include Olympic gold medal winners Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber. This case was one of the fisrst major ones that opened -
-place. (3/)
MeToo also showed us the stark reality of the millions of women who have been affected by sexual predators and shitheads with everyone’s timelines flooded with the hashtag whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even Tumblr. (4/)
Since then, the phrase caught on like wildfire which spread from the entertainment industry and out to all the professional sectors and the masses. These two words have encouraged hundreds of women to have the strength to come out with their stories and has offered them a safe -
The hashtag truly caught on when actor Alyssa Milano tweeted requesting survivors to tweet out the phrase MeToo if they had ever been sexually assaulted or harassed during the Harvey Weinstein scandal. (2/)
Thread time folks!!
The #MeToo Movement initially began sometime in Mid-2000s when Tarana Burke, an African-American civil rights activist who is a survivor herself, encouraged women of colour to use that phrase to come forward with their stories of being sexually assaulted. (1/)
Ahem, incidentally, do you know where else you can get some Chess action? At our sports fest Parakram at NMIMS School of Law at 2nd and 3rd February, 2019. Mark your calendars people!!
