USED FUEL CENTRAL: @ENERGY has designated @INL as its hub for all things used nuclear fuel, from critical R&D and demonstration projects to international collaboration.

The new Center for Used Fuel Research will leverage the lab’s unique skills, expertise, and facilities to bring together diverse partners and advance the U.S. as a global leader in nuclear waste solutions.

Great trend. I'm seeing it every week now. #NuclearEnergy #nuclear

THAT'S IT?

This is what 20 years worth of spent nuclear fuel looks like safely stored at the former Maine Yankee nuclear plant.

The energy produced from this fuel helped avoid 70 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.

[James Hopf @HopfJames]

The oil and gas industry's intellectually dishonest, bad faith effort to block central interim storage of used nuclear fuel in NM and TX is growing. (The industry owns the politicians in those two states.)

The notion that a dry cask storage facility could have a tangible negative impact on oil/gas operations miles away is patently absurd and is known to be false. That leaves only one possibile (actual) motivation; fear of competition from a robust, growing future nuclear power industry. Lack of progress on waste being one of the largest sources of the lack of public support that's holding nuclear back.

While plans for very-large-scale electricity storage are being pursued, renewables remain dependent on gas generation for backup. How long the gas dependence will remain is an open question. Perhaps the oil/gas industry thinks it will be a long time. If not, why would they bother to screw nuclear over?

Stored nuclear waste has never harmed anyone, and no credible event at such a facility could cause significant or tangible harm outside the (remote) facility's boundary. So, we have an industry that has always caused major environmental harm attacking a harmless project, the arguement being unacceptable environmental risk!

Here's a radical idea. If it boils down to a choice between the two, let's get rid of the (infinately more harmful) oil/gas operations instead! That's what we would do if we really cared about the environment (climate change, etc..)! Will never happen of source, given that oil/gas industry owns those states (as I said above).

BTW, their claim that the storage facility does not have local/community support is also false. The local towns are strongly in support. Nuclear waste facilities have actually had no trouble getting local support (local jobs, etc..). States have always been the problem. Economic benefits for the whole state are to small, while the stigma of being "singled out" as THE place to store or dispose of nuclear waste.

I'm not sanguine about that ever changing, despite efforts at "community based siting." (Again, the local "communities" have never been the problem.) My view is that if we're ever to get nuclear waste sites approved, we're going to have to write states out of the process. Local support only required.

It's not like such things have no precedence. RIght now there is a major movement to write local communities out of the process with respect to siting renewable generation and transmission projects. The reason being ("baseless") local NIMBY resistence that is slowing things down. Apparently, THAT is unacceptable (as opposed to never resolving the nuclear waste issue, eh?). Nuclear waste facility siting should be included in permitting reform.

@blloyd8298 All good...50-40-90 club and 17th pick... I would love to have 30 guys ahead of him though

Anthony Gill is by all accounts one of the hardest working and most pleasant people in the Wizards organization to be around. People go out of their way to praise him.

I talked to him and others about every Wizards player’s favorite teammate. https://t.co/QvSzW4NFba
