"I became increasingly certain of a truth I had just started to grasp: freedom couldn’t be imposed from above; it would only come from popular struggles in a society." @alexshams_

exclusive: Indian gov't officials in May quietly greenlit a plan to steer ~$3.9 billion in taxpayer funds to Modi’s billionaire ally Gautam Adani in order to, among other things, signal "confidence" in his empire + encourage investor participation, gov't docs we obtained show. The plan came months after Adani's DOJ and SEC charges, which have plagued the billionaire, and docs show funds are steered from India's Life Insurance Corporation, which underwrites life insurance for poor + rural Indian families.

My uncle Jagdeep Chhokar @JagdeepChhokar , co-founder of @adrspeaks passed away early this morning.
His lifes work, after he retired from IIM-A, was towards improving our democracy, irrespective of political party. Whether it was his pushback against simultaneous elections, petitioning the Supreme Court in the Pegasus case, or more recently related to Bihar's voter lists, it's something that he continued working on tirelessly.
I joked with him at his 80th birthday celebration last year that while most people teach their kids how to stay out of trouble, I learned from him how to get into trouble (fighting the good fight for freedoms).
Will really miss our banter.
India's Boiling Point

Now, prove your identity.
“This exercise reveals the state's presumptuous character. It burdens citizens with the constant demand to prove their identity, as if they are forever on probation.
The KYC (know your customer) mania has extended to voting: Proof must be furnished again and again, often under arbitrary or shifting standards.”
