•Helped spark the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Scientific Revolution.
•Disrupted religious monopolies, monarchic control, and centuries of narrative gatekeeping.
Books were handmade by scribes - slow, sacred, elite.
Literacy was power. Keeping it exclusive ensured religious and political control.
“Mass communication” wasn’t even an imaginable category.
