Our Caste Is Defined by Character, Not Birth
Bhagavad Gita 18.42
Lord Krishna says:
"Serenity, self-control, austerity, purity, forgiveness, straightforwardness, knowledge, wisdom, and faith in the Divine are the natural qualities and duties of a Brahmana."
Context
In Chapter 18, Lord Krishna explains that the four Varnas are determined by one's Svabhava (inherent nature) and Gunas (qualities), not merely by birth. Here, He describes the qualities of a true Brahmana, someone devoted to wisdom, self-mastery, and spiritual living.
The Core Meaning
Krishna defines a Brahmana by character, not social status.
He lists nine qualities that every spiritual seeker should cultivate:
• Shama: Serenity and mastery over the mind.
• Dama: Self-control over the senses.
• Tapas: Discipline and willingness to endure hardship for a higher purpose.
• Shaucham: Outer cleanliness and inner purity.
• Kshanti: Patience and forgiveness.
• Arjavam: Honesty and integrity in thought, word, and action.
• Jnanam: Scriptural and spiritual knowledge.
• Vijnanam: Wisdom gained through direct experience.
• Astikyam: Faith in God, Dharma, and the eternal truth.
These are not qualities reserved for a particular community. They are universal virtues that anyone can cultivate.
Practical Application
Meditate daily to develop inner peace.
Practice self-control instead of reacting to every desire.
Live with integrity so your thoughts, words, and actions remain aligned.
Transform knowledge into lived experience.
Forgive quickly, because resentment disturbs your own peace more than anyone else's.
Reflection
Ask yourself:
• Is my mind becoming calmer each day?
• Do I control my senses, or do they control me?
• Am I merely collecting knowledge, or living it?
• Which of these nine qualities can I strengthen today?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Insight
A true Brahmana is known by the quality of the mind, not by birth. Through meditation, Seva, and self-knowledge, peace, wisdom, and compassion naturally blossom within every individual.
Swami Vivekananda's Insight
Swami Vivekananda taught that Varna is determined by character and conduct, not birth. Anyone who develops purity, self-control, wisdom, and God-consciousness embodies the true spirit of a Brahmana.
Adi Shankaracharya's Commentary
Adi Shankaracharya explains that these qualities arise from a Sattvic mind and prepare the seeker for Self-realization. Knowledge matures into wisdom when it is lived, not merely studied.
The Essence
A true Brahmana is not identified by birth, but by inner excellence.
Peace, self-control, purity, wisdom, integrity, and faith are the signs of spiritual maturity.
By cultivating these qualities, every seeker moves closer to Self-realization.

You walk until you come to the ocean. You don’t walk or run in the ocean – you float and swim. Like this once you come to the Master, seeking stops, blossoming begins. — @Gurudev
Feeling Lonely Despite Having Everything? @Gurudev Explains Why
Why a True Devotee Never Says, "Injustice Happened to Me"
Question - Even after having so much knowledge, why do people still feel lonely? And how should a devotee understand justice, injustice, and right or wrong?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji - In spite of having so much knowledge, you may still feel lonely. The reason is that there is no connection with the Big Mind, the Brahman.
One who has a Guru in life should never feel lonely.
And if you truly believe in God, then you cannot say, "Injustice has happened to me."
God is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient.
Then how can you say that Brahman, that all-powerful presence, has done injustice to you?
A devotee cannot say that because the feeling of injustice keeps you small.
Are you getting what I'm saying?
Justice and injustice are concepts of the mind that keep you confined within a shell.
That is Maya.
This is a little higher knowledge. It is not for beginners.
If it doesn't ring a bell within you, then forget about it for now. There will be a time when you may understand it.
When that all-powerful presence is with you 24×7, how could that Brahman ever cause injustice to you?
And if that higher power is present in everything and everybody, then how can there really be injustice?
It is all a play.
This is an inner understanding.
Lord Krishna also said to Arjuna:
"I am present in every heart."
Drop the feeling:
"I am doing something wrong."
"I am doing something right."
Just fight.
Fight without this concern.
Become an instrument.
Act without becoming the actor.
This is very, very subtle and very delicate.
Not everybody can grasp it.
If you don't understand it now, that's alright.
There will be a time when you will understand.
For now, just let it be.

Guru is close to you, and you are close to Guru. Don't ever doubt that "Gurudev doesn't love me" or "He is not close to me, He is close to somebody else." From your side, you should feel that you are very close to Guru. Period.

Q: Gurudev, in the story of Shiva burning Kamadeva and then Kartikeya being born later, what is the deeper meaning of this for our desires and our spiritual growth?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji - In South India, a story goes that on this holy day, Lord Shiva was in deep penance. The demonic forces around the world were on the rise. A demon called Tarakasur had created mayhem in the world. He had a boon from Brahma that nobody could kill him other than the progeny of Lord Shiva.
Devas decided to send Manmatha or Kamdeva to bring Shiva out of penance. He saw Lord Shiva sitting silently in penance. Manmatha started disturbing Shiva in his penance by shooting arrows at him. When Manmatha shot the final arrow, Shiva, opened his third eye and burnt Manmatha.
This story is widely known to us but there is deeper significance in this act of burning Kamdev or Manmatha.
Kamdeva stands for desires. Any joy you experience in life is from the depth of your Self. When you let go of all that you are holding on to and settle down being centered in that space, bliss is right there. If we don’t consciously burn our desires, our desires will burn us. When Shiva opened his third eye and burnt all desires, it meant that humans become contented and whole with a sense of surrender to the divine.
Are all desires bad?
This scared all the gods (devatas) as the world can move forward only with desires. So Lord Shiva decided to create a desire in humans to enable the world to function. That was the desire for TRUTH – Satyakam. Once again the world burst into colours and life was no more insipid. Lord Shiva united with Shakti and gave birth to Skanda or Kartikeya. Kartikeya on his seventh day killed Tarkasur.
Symbolism of Kartikeya
Shiva is Prashanth or tranquil and Shakti is energy. Kartikeya was born out of this union. Kartikeya, therefore, incorporates within him the energy of a fighter, a child of fire and full of wisdom. We need to imbibe in our life the qualities of Kartikeya which is courage and the ability to fulfill our desire for truth. Lord Shiva has burnt our negative desires and has awakened within us the desire for truth.
Nature has all colours, and so does your mind. Your mind has so many moods and emotions. You feel happy or unhappy sometimes, then you feel angry or jealous, other times you feel compassionate, you feel generous-there is a kaleidoscope of colorful emotions in there. Your mind is not the same all the time. These emotions and moods keep changing. When you know you are not these colours, you are not these moods, you can enjoy them more. You will see that it is only your own mind that troubles you the most and nobody else.
We become agitated only due to our own minds. It is our mind that binds us, and makes us identify with all these emotions. When we understand that we are not the mind, we will be able to just witness and rejoice in our life. Mediation is the way to this realization.
Meditation is not an act; it is the art of doing nothing! The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have because in meditation you transcend all desires. This brings such coolness to the mind and body.
Celebration is the nature of the spirit and the celebration that comes out of silence is real. If sacredness is attached to a celebration, it becomes total, complete. It’s not just body and mind but also the spirit that celebrates.
