@SCanington @AcademicChatter Some descretion is always used. At the start of each chapter Massey University, NZ asks you to write a statement saying the contents of this chapter are published. In addition, students are asked to complete a “statement of contribution” form for published material

@MiguelGilJIBS @payeldas1011 @OpenAcademics Sometimes the the reverse is the true, a PhD can be a nightmare. I came across so many students whose mental health worsened during or after their PhD. Often universities offer little or no support and PIs don’t have a clue about something called mental health.

@PhD_Genie You have a choice of not doing it. You are doing it for yourself, creating something new. This is what kept me going even when the stipend ran out. But motivation alone is not enough. My lovely wife inspired me at every step in this journey! @LakshVani.

@ArindamPhysics To add: once you are at the other end of the tunnel there is no certainty of jobs and PIs expect the students to just disappear (read “gain experience elsewhere”). The stipends are less than minimum wage (leave aside living wage).

@ArindamPhysics 2/2 the cost of visas have gone up and the govt has moved to renewing visas yearly. It is hard to be a PhD student in NZ at the moment. Stipend is NZD 30000 (under 20k USD as of today) and this also includes tuition. Visiting home will set you back by a quarter for two people.
