Elections are important. If we have any chance of keeping abortion safe and legal in any state, we need to elect good people in November. If anti-abortion politicians control the House, Senate (and in 2 years the Presidency) abortion will be illegal everywhere.
@apoorva_nyc I don’t agree that boosters are wasted. We are going through our fourth surge in MI right now and seeing tons of breakthrough with those vaxxed >6 months. I agree we need more vaccine distribution worldwide and better public health mitigation, but the boosters are needed.
The American Academy of Pediatrics applauds the @CDCgov's advisory committee's approval of a safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 5-11. Read the full statement here: https://t.co/tUjQJc7q2t #VaccinesWork#ThisIsOurShot#PutKids1st
@ClendenenJ@_stah That’s the hard part! We don’t have great tests. Even measuring antibody levels is not 100% accurate or maybe even clinically relevant. Our best correlate is infection/severe illness/death post vaccination or post infection and that data is messy.
We need more data on how to measure immunity for both the vaccinated and those with immunity from infection. It’s not as simple that you can assume protection from COVID if infected.
I somehow stupidly replied to a thread and am now arguing with folks who don’t think vaccines work and that natural immunity outperforms all vaccines. Unfortunately they debate is more complicated than a tweet but it worries me with all the absolute language- “no, none, nobody”.
Scientists know better than to speak in absolutes (or they should). There are stories showing natural immunity outperforming vaccines and at least one study showing the vaccinated less likely to get COVID than the naturally infected. There is a lot left out of these quick takes.
Natural infection brings risks at a personal and population level. Looking at reinfection in those who have had COVID leaves out the hundreds of thousands who can’t be reinfected because they died from COVID. This conversation is nuanced. We know the vaccines work.
@blblackburn89@_stah Also in all reinfection studies of those naturally infected you have naturally removed all those who died from natural COVID infection. So your samples are different and skewed towards natural immunity. Science is complicated and messy. Doesn’t tweet easily.
@blblackburn89@_stah That’s false. Science is complicated. One study showing those with COVID more likely for reinfection. An Israeli study did show natural infection slightly outperformed vaccination but infection plus vaccination worked best.
