his fanboy-followers are annoying but i must say i am enjoying db hart's translation of κήρυγμα. eminently readable, faithful to original. his translation of μετάνοια as "changing one's nous" is closer to original than the r-word. also appreciate his rendering of μάγος as magos.
i like db hart's translation but is it is really necessary to render the "ὑποκρίσεως [hypokriseōs]" of "ὑποκρίσεως καὶ ἀνομίας" as the latinate "dissimulation" instead of the familiar greek-derived "hypocrisy"? why go out of the way to change/latinize? keep it greek, man.
Kids are just discovering that I am something of a kanji savant. They will never stump me. Right now we're playing a game where they read the kunyomi of a kanji from their kokugo textbooks, & I say the onyomi & the mandarin pronunciation. Just got 潟 correct.
Ruan Ji [210–263] cultivated the persona of the "drunken madman" to avoid the social demands of Confucian society, and he was renowned for his “transcendental whistling” (changxiao), which in Chinese antiquity was associated with Daoist mysticism and spirit summoning.
I never see or experience anything directly. Everything I see or experience is mediated through precursor texts, through the traditions ❨whether Sino-Japanese, Western, or Byzantine❩. In Japanese, we call this mitate 見立, or "seeing by comparison."
Ryan M Reeves has released a good video on Saint Palamas, the East-West split, hysechasm, the energeia - ousia distinction, the Ottoman conquest, etc. Why No One Came to Save Constantinople in 1453. 34 minutes.
It isn't so much scratch a liberal & you'll find a fascist (as the saying has it) but rather scratch a liberal & [very often] you'll find a profoundly darkened nous νοῦς.
"Honkadori 本歌取, or allusive variation, involves the incorporation of some of the diction & conception of an earlier ‘foundation poem’ (honka), modifying it by adding something new” ー Laurel Rasplica Rodd (2015, XXXIII)
@culture_think excellent; I leave all that stuff up to my kids' most excellent piano teacher [who has had many students grow into concert pianists]. very important to find an excellent piano teacher in the area. my only suggestions: Hanon books & Bach Inventions to start out!
only a gulliver-like figure can broker and enforce a peace between the lilliputians and the blefuscudians. it's a shame there isn't some roman-empire-like hegemon around today to impose and maintain order from above.
@C2Antiquity I’m a 40 year old black man raising 3 kids by myself. I’ve been a catechumen for over a year. My parish has converts of all races. The Holy Spirit is calling people back to its Church. It’s insulting to think only white people are converting
Very happy for him; I wept when the announcer Joe Davis told viewers the story of how he lost much of his family, including his father, in the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of 2011. I don't think many anglophones knew before that broadcast.
@DrThemi Happily many of those taboos, esp those around gender & sexual ethics, will always remain bc they are built into the very structure of the Real. As you noted in your first Hermitix interview ❨which I thoroughly enjoyed❩, not everything can be reduced to the Symbolic, to Geist.

I think I went through a Bataille phase ❨in terms of life practices, modes of thought❩ in my twenties and early thirties, despite only being vaguely aware of his ideas; strange how this is possible.
