I was more nervous being interviewed by these two than being on TV but what a fun experience! Spoke about the process of policymaking, why it’s hard to share much on our work with restructuring and plugging of leakages and why inclusive policies are important as the foundation.
Dalam satu operasi besar-besaran hari ini, polis selamatkan 402 orang kanak-kanak berusia setahun hingga 17 tahun yang disyaki diabai dan didera daripada 18 buah rumah kebajikan berbeza. Aku ulang, 402 orang kanak kanak. God knows for how long dah dorang abai, exploit them etc
This scene wrecked me. Watch Abang Adik now while you still can, I was trying so hard to contain my sobs but no point cos everyone else was sobbing too 🥲
Mean performance for PISA 2022 dropped globally (partially) due to the learning disruptions from the pandemic, but it is worrying that Malaysia’s top 20% (in terms of socioeconomic status) perform only as well as average SES students in Vietnam…
Just in: Out of 81 countries & economies, these are Malaysia’s latest PISA rankings (https://t.co/baLn8aXDz4):
#52 in science
#54 in math
#60 in reading
All 2022 scores ⬇️ from 2018
#1 country in ALL categories? Singapore! Japan, Korea consistently in top 10

A pair of siblings in Gaza City found their brother on Monday while searching for family members among the injured at the Bureij Refugee Camp. Many came to the camp following Israeli airstrikes nearby.
"If I die, remember that I, we, were individuals, humans, we had names, dreams and achievements and our only fault was that we were classified as inferior."
Powerful @nytimes ad published today
@NDTiong_Edu The thing is, we have (or had) all the right ingredients for this recipe. We had PBS which helped to determine where each student is at for every skill, we had, as you pointed out, SISC+, lesson study etc. So MOE knows theoretically what are needed
#Malaysian adolescents have a serious #mentalhealth challenge:
i) one-fourth among secondary school-goers are #depressed;
ii) one-tenth had attempted or planned #suicide;
iii) the trends are worsening when compared to past data.
What do these numbers mean for educational attainment?
Does student #happiness have anything to do with their #learning effort in #school?
My latest paper with @erictham of @jcu explores the happiness-learning connection among adolescents in urban #Malaysia during #COVID19 school closure.

I used this method too and it worked for us! NGL I was really nervous that she’s past the “window of opportunity” (between 20-30 months) but it clicked for her at 35 months on her own 😱
You can read this ‘cuz you're educated
But one facet of education gets short shrift:
PRE-schooling!
We (World Bank) launched a report on🇲🇾’s preschooling led by my crack colleague, Aija Rinkinen (who also helped build Finland’s edu system)
What are Msia's triumphs & woes?
I don’t think any parent would like their child to cry in planes, the stress and fear of being judged is insane. I brought a bag of snacks, iPad and toys but my 2.5 year old still wailed (lack of sleep, overtired etc). You really don’t know how they’ll be sometimes 😌
Wisdom from my kid: it’s okay to be okay.
Sometimes there will always be a push and pull of concepts. The natural order of life. Yin and yang.
When things are going good, how many times have we got a little nagging guilt, suspicion that something must be off?
How do we respond to sometimes creeping sense of wanting to be the victim, and feeling we may not necessarily deserve the best? The stories we need to tell ourselves. To find a fault in our past and life circumstance.
And sometimes, when the sun is out, day is bright, life is okay — it would be just good to take it in. Build the strength — deposit for rainy days whenever it comes.
