先日の『乙嫁語り』に関するツイートで、中央アジアでイスラム教が深く根付いていることを知らないという日本の皆さんからのコメントを多く見かけました。多くの人が、イスラム教というとヒジャブや厳格なルール、あるいはテロといったイメージと結びつけて考えているようです。「えっ、この漫画のキャラクターたちってイスラム教徒だったの？」という声も非常に多かったです。

実は、中央アジアのイスラム化は古く、7世紀〜8世紀のアラブ人の進出から始まりました。しかし、ここで発展したイスラム教（主にスンニ派ハナフィー学派やスーフィズム）は、遊牧民の伝統文化と深く結びついています。遊牧民の女性は馬に乗り、厳しい自然の中で生活していたため、髪や顔を完全に隠す厳格なヒジャブは非現実的でした。そのため、中東のようなルールではなく、独自の美しい民族衣装や実用的な頭巾へと発展したのです。だから『乙嫁語り』のキャラクターたちはあのような服装なのです。
