A heartbreaking tragedy: 12-year-old Sarah Niyimbona, a Black girl, died by suicide at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, in April 2025.
Sarah was receiving psychiatric care and was supposed to be under 24-hour supervision, but she was able to leave her room undetected, walk to a nearby parking structure, and jump. She passed away shortly after.
Following her death, the hospital fired 15 nurses, citing HIPAA violations for improperly accessing her medical records. The nurses’ union claims the firings were retaliatory after staff raised concerns about patient care and staffing levels.
Our hearts go out to Sarah’s family during this unimaginable loss. Rest in peace, sweet girl. 🕊️🙏🏽
