People with “Free Palestine,” “human rights,” and “free speech” plastered in their bios are out here celebrating a Sri Lankan Tamil migrant getting the death penalty in Saudi Arabia over a fucking Facebook comment. All that activism is just cosplay. Absolute filthy hypocrites.
@sekartweets CM of TN is also has the moral representation of Tamil diaspora around the world. He’s the leader of Tamil heartland. If @CMOTamilnadu voice for that it will make a huge difference. Hope he do something about this
A dog used to follow pilgrims to a Hindu religious site in Sri Lanka, and videos of it were shared warmly in Sri Lankan Hindu circles.
In late June, offended by the videos, a Muslim man went to the pilgrimage site, located the dog, kicked it, and uploaded the video, sparking outrage. During one such argument, a Sri Lankan Muslim wrote a derogatory post against the Hindu deity.
Anojan Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan Hindu working as a laborer in Saudi Arabia, didn't like the comment and responded with a reply that was allegedly derogatory to the Prophet.
Anojan's well-wisher immediately warned him. He took down the comment and issued a video apology within five minutes in which he said he was responding to an insult to his faith. However, it was too late. Anojan's fellow Sri Lankan Muslims had already taken a screenshot and emailed it to his employer in Saudi Arabia. His employer promptly reported it to the authorities, who arrested Anojan and put him on trial. He has been sentenced to death.
Saudi Arabia rarely reverses a decision once it has made one, but there should be global outrage over this. Blasphemy laws or whatever, the man was only responding to an insult to his faith, deleted the comment, and issued an apology within minutes, yet he will still have to pay with his life while those who provoked him are rejoicing in Sri Lanka. This is unacceptable. Anyone calling themselves a free speech supporter and not opposing this is a hypocrite of the highest order.
When it suits you: 'Offensive speech = free speech.'
When it offends you: 'Well done Saudi Arabia.'
Thanks for proving to everyone that your commitment to freedom of speech and human rights are 100% fake.
You don’t get to preach about Human rights, Islamophobia, Western imperialist wars and atrocities in Palestine only to cheer on a death sentence for a Facebook comment. because human rights should be universal. It can’t be selective. Opposing oppression isn't a team sport.
Every country in the world has blasphemy laws.
The only difference is what they worship.
Some worship God. Others worship money, power, the state, nationalism, ideology, national symbols or the military.
And insulting these “gods” is a punishable offense in every country.
Friend of mine is defending the death sentence handed to a Tamil migrant over a Facebook comment about Prophet Muhammad. I always call out anti-Muslim bigotry, Hindutva extremism and atrocities in Palestine. When will people realize opposing cruelty applies to your own side too?
When you condemn violence and hate from others but celebrate and justify it when your own group does it, you are no longer operating on moral principles. You aren't secular, you can't preach against hate, and you lose the right to be upset when your religion is targeted. Period.
Death sentence for a Facebook post?
The case involved what authorities treated as confirmed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
Stop packaging a serious blasphemy case as a harmless social-media post just to manufacture outrage.
@peterxbangtan Turning financial assistance into forcing women is a massive logical leap. You’re arguing against a hypothetical coercion while completely ignoring the women and families who actually need the financial support. Reality exists outside Twitter, please.
Public transportation is for everyone.
If a woman is intoxicated and gets on a bus trusting that public transport will help her get home safely, her safety should be the priority—not publicly shaming her.
If she is genuinely too intoxicated to travel safely, the responsible response is to help her. The conductor could seek police assistance and ensure she gets a taxi or auto to reach home safely.
Instead, filming her in a vulnerable state and circulating the video without her consent only humiliates her publicly. God knows what she is going through in her life.
Drinking alcohol is not, by itself, a justification for stripping someone of their dignity. Whether we approve of her condition or not is beside the point. A vulnerable passenger needs assistance, not a camera pointed at her.
Public transport should be a safe space for everyone—especially when someone is vulnerable.
