Thoughts on Valiant:

1) It stays very true to the WCM idiom and there are no compromises or mislabelling. This is very much a piece that sticks to the grammar of WCM

2) There are places where Raaja’s approach has been distinctly melodic which is a unique way to approach WCM i guess but again no compromises. All ideas arrive fully formed and developed

3) The music has texture, colour and layers with signature countrapuntal and imitations. If you are aware of his oeuvre there are a lot of easter eggs everywhere. Infact Valiant is a compilation of all his symphonic ideas that he introduced to us over many decades.

4) If you are not aware of Raaja’s work or WCM it will still work provided you listen to it 2-3 times without hurrying through it

5) There have been many attempts made at singing classical music in non classical spaces. But i think this is the first time that folks with no formal education in WCM or any form of “high art” are engaging with the art form. Raaja brought the audiences to the music and not the music to the audiences by dumbing it down. That is in my opinion Raaja’s greatest achievement.

If the modi government doesn’t announce the bharat ratna now, then it is a grave disservice to one of the greatest geniuses of our time
