RECUSAL FIGHT: Letitia James is leading the investigation into the Cornell 7 gang rape allegations โ but one of the accused students wants her removed, arguing she publicly sided with the accuser before she was even appointed to the case.
Attorney Andrew Miltenberg, representing accused student Gillio Lopes, points to a Sept. 28 post on X where James wrote: "What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I'm holding her in my heart and in my prayers." Lopes filed a court petition on Oct. 7 seeking her removal, citing concerns about impartiality. Gov. Hochul has defended the appointment.
The recusal bid comes as James faces renewed scrutiny over how she handled sexual misconduct allegations against her own former chief of staff, Ibrahim Khan, who was allowed to quietly resign in 2022 after an outside investigation substantiated claims that he forcibly kissed a former deputy press secretary at a political fundraiser.
