Hate saying this, but #Mumbai is a city in retreat. It was once the cradle of the renaissance & industry. But today, from the intellectual scene to food & education, the city's downslide is evident, thanks to the unholy builder- politician- babu nexus which has led to its gentrification. #Mumbai is transforming into an exclusive space for the rich & well-heeled.
The middle and lower middle class cannot afford to settle in Mumbai, they have been pushed to the margins & beyond, spending half of their waking hours commuting for work. New talent is loath to move here due to high real-estate prices, rents & long commutes & prefer tier-II cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru & Gurgaon instead.
The city has no book shops to speak of & the food scene sucks.
Mumbai may soon become another Calcutta. It's best days are already behind it.
Is it too late to stem the slide?
PS: Of course, the redeeming factor in Mumbai are it's warm-hearted & accomodating people.
