Hello DRX Family,
Today, I have some final news to share directly with you. I am stepping down as CEO of DRX. It's been a while since our last communication, and I apologize for delivering such sudden news.
Looking back, founding DRX in 2019 and acquiring Kingzone was a significant challenge for me. Originally, I intended to sell the team and return to my other ambitions, but the circumstances weren't easy. The thought of disappointing our players and staff if the team ceased to exist was a heavy burden I carried. Fighting for the survival of the company brought me to this point, with many sleepless nights along the way.
One night, unable to sleep until dawn, I called my father and asked if I could just live with him, doing nothing. He told me to come live with him in the countryside if things got too tough, no matter what happened. I cried a lot that night, but his words gave me the strength to bear the weight of the world and keep moving forward. Overcoming those challenges, I decided to grow the team properly in 2020, dedicating all my passion to it. I declared 2020 as the 'Year of Rapid Growth' and poured every ounce of my energy into making DRX thrive.
Bringing together our players was a precious experience for me, and I cherished every moment spent with them. Driving them around, fulfilling my personal fan dreams, and even donning a mascot costume to entertain them—these were joyous times. Those were the days when everything was new and exciting, filled with brilliant moments. I remember this period as the most passionate and glorious time of my life. I am still grateful for the love and support from our fans.
However, I also acknowledge the hardship our staff endured due to my inexperience and ambition. I owe them a deep sense of apology and gratitude for those early days.
You might recall my first major setback when we failed to re-sign key players. I deeply disappointed our fans and felt a lot of frustration myself. Though I had things to say, I chose to remain silent out of a sense of responsibility to protect the team. In hindsight, I believe it was the right decision, as what you all wanted was the re-signing of players, not my grievances.
To recover from that shock, I designated 2021 as the 'Year of Pursuing Happiness,' delegating more responsibilities to our staff to foster unity and happiness among everyone involved. Despite a challenging summer season, I was encouraged by the team's resolve and readiness to push forward.
Entering 2022, we aimed for a fresh start. Though it was the most tumultuous year, with setbacks like coaching changes and early playoff exits, our team remained united and undeterred. Regularly meeting with our team captain, we often said, "Let's not be broken." This resilience paid off as we eventually clinched the Worlds Championship—a triumph that brought immense joy.
In 2023, we focused on realizing our values and managed to increase business revenue by nearly 50%. However, we faced challenges in team composition, leading to another tough season. Now, I must acknowledge that our second major setback in team composition was a huge disappointment.
While others only had to fire their ultimates once, I had to pull the trigger twice, and it felt like a kick in the teeth each time. That failure was entirely on me, a result of my shortcomings, and there's no one else to blame. Hopes were high with the belief that we could finally be consistently happy, but being dragged down and failing again was incredibly painful. Still, I gathered myself for the sake of the team and our staff, and this process of overcoming challenges is part of the DRX spirit we share.
As we embarked on 2024, aiming to foster immersion and enjoyment within the team, we reorganized our structure to align individual and collective interests. Although the spring season was disappointing, we made meticulous efforts to bounce back this summer, and I believe we will achieve the results you all desire.
I hope DRX has been a source of comfort and pride in your lives. As I leave, I trust that DRX will continue to thrive and renew itself. Over the past six years, many have joined DRX with a mission to spread the value of challenge, and I believe they will continue to lead DRX with that spirit.
I carry the weight of your past disappointments and regrets, as they are the result of my shortcomings. But the core team that brought glory to DRX remains, and I ask for your heartfelt support and encouragement for them.
Though I am stepping down, I will begin new challenges elsewhere. I hope my journey has shown that even someone as flawed as me can achieve great things through relentless challenge. I wish to inspire you all to endure the weights of life with hope and strength.
Thank you for the laughter, the tears, the happiness, and the fun. To the players and staff who silently endured under my leadership, I am deeply grateful and proud of you.
Once again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Your passionate but often imperfect leader,
Sang In Choi a.k.a DRX DOwner
