@JaneDismore Yes, he ended up being banned from every pub in Deal. The biography by Roger Lewis has some very amusing tales & pics, esp of the when the fire brigade attended the house & he refused to come down the ladder until they sent up the biggest fireman they had!

@robert_lyman Tks Robert, really interesting. Co-incidentally, I’m just reading GMF’s ‘Quartered Safe Out Here’ and the account of his own Burma campaign and those of his section is a gripping read. I found how they dealt with the loss of comrades KIA, particularly moving.

@jerijerod14 This is a good read. I think Lt.col Going was a major in the 2/SWB in 1914 & wrote a diary of the campaign, which they have at the regimental museum in Brecon, alongwith some of the gifts the troops received from the Japanese Emperor.

@neilojim1972 Also, didn’t DeValera and Churchill meet for a private dinner at Downing St in the early 1950s? Which to me suggests a much more complex relationship than the usual narrative and that in reality Irish neutrality was just an allusion for external appearances?

@neilojim1972 Really interesting piece Jim. I only knew Churchill’s request to using the old treaty ports being denied and the whole Hitler ‘condolences’ issue, so good to highlight the reality of Irish ‘neutrality’!
