Everyone remembers the attack on the Mumbai railway station on 26/11, the gunmen walking the platforms, more than fifty people killed. Almost nobody remembers the announcer whose voice sent hundreds of strangers running the other way while the bullets were still flying.

His name is Vishnu Dattaram Zende.

On the night of 26 November 2008, he was on duty in the announcer's cabin at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a raised glass room looking out over the platforms. It was near the end of his shift when he heard a loud blast and gunfire, and saw people running.

Two terrorists had walked into the busiest station in the country and begun shooting everyone in sight. At that station alone, they would kill more than fifty people.

From his cabin he could see the whole layout, and he understood something fast. Local trains were still pulling in, each one about to pour hundreds of passengers straight onto the platforms where the gunmen were standing.

He had a microphone that reached every platform. He decided to use it, even though it meant staying exactly where he was, in full view, instead of hiding.

He began making announcements, over and over, in Hindi and Marathi, telling people not to come to the main concourse, telling them to leave by the rear exits, warning them away from the guns.

Hundreds of people changed direction because of that voice and walked out of the station instead of into the bullets.

The terrorists worked out where the announcements were coming from. They came and stood almost directly below his cabin. One of them fired up toward him. He kept low, waited, and when he could, went back to the microphone.

He was an ordinary railway announcer on an ordinary shift. He had no weapon and no protection, just a mic and a clear view of what was coming. He stayed at his post and used the one tool he had to push strangers out of the path of the killers.

The men with the rifles are the names everyone remembers from that station. The voice that quietly saved hundreds of the people they came to kill belonged to Vishnu Zende.

Over the last few weeks, you might have heard his name. That is because he was recently appointed Commissioner of State’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since taking charge, the FDA has been on an absolute warpath, raiding illegal, fake, synthetic, and adulterated products. From synthetic milk networks and adulterated paneer to illegal gutkha and unhygienic eateries, nothing has escaped his radar.

Mundhe has made it clear that even the most famous names will not get a free pass. His department shocked Mumbai by suspending the food licenses of iconic establishments, such as the 73-year-old Marine Drive ice cream parlor K. Rustom & Co., alongside famous eateries like Shalimar Hospitality, Noor Mohammadi Hotel, and Rahmaniya Restaurant, after surprise inspections uncovered severe hygiene violations, including live pests and expired ingredients.

Such is the fear of his crackdowns that, just two days ago, dairy farmers were caught on video spilling hundreds of liters of synthetic milk after rumors of an impending FDA raid spread.

This is his 25th transfer in a 21-year career, a testament to his refusal to bend to political pressure. It makes you wonder: if just one IAS officer can bring about so much change, where would our country be if every bureaucrat were as uncompromising and proactive as him?

विपिन कुमार रोमानिया में काम करने वाले एक भारतीय निर्माण श्रमिक हैं।

एक दिन वह क्रायोवा के निकोले रोमानेस्कु पार्क के पास से गुजर रहे थे। तभी उन्होंने देखा कि एक छोटी बच्ची बर्फ की पतली परत टूटने के बाद बर्फीले पानी में गिर गई और डूबने लगी। उसे बचाने के लिए उसके पिता भी आगे बढ़े, लेकिन वे भी टूटी हुई बर्फ में फंस गए।

विपिन ने बिना एक पल की देरी किए पास में पड़ी एक स्लेज की मदद से बच्ची तक पहुंचने की कोशिश की। इसी दौरान उनके नीचे की बर्फ भी टूट गई और वे भी बर्फीले पानी में गिर गए। फिर भी उन्होंने बच्ची को पकड़ लिया और करीब 30 मिनट तक उसे पानी के ऊपर सुरक्षित पकड़े रखा, जब तक कि बचाव दल वहां नहीं पहुंच गया।

इस दौरान विपिन और बच्ची, दोनों को भीषण ठंड की वजह से गंभीर हाइपोथर्मिया हो गया। इसके बाद दोनों को अस्पताल ले जाया गया, जहां उनका इलाज किया गया।

विपिन कुमार की बहादुरी और अपनी जान जोखिम में डालकर बच्ची की जान बचाने के लिए रोमानिया ने उन्हें मानद नागरिकता प्रदान की।
