Research indicates that regularly consuming very hot beverages or foods, typically at temperatures above 65°C (149°F), may irritate the lining of the oesophagus, potentially leading to cellular changes that could increase the risk of cancer development over time.
This is thought to be due to thermal injury to the cells lining the oesophagus, which can cause inflammation and damage that may contribute to the development of cancerous cells.
Allowing hot drinks and foods to cool to a more moderate temperature before consumption may help reduce the risk of oesophageal cancer.
While more studies are needed to fully understand the relationship between hot food and beverage consumption and cancer risk, moderating temperature intake is a simple and potentially beneficial preventative measure.
