Here's my theory of how:

- First they got privatized as schools had to cut budgets.
- Private clubs are run by people fanatical about one sport
- Then they become year round
- The three-sport athlete idea was gone
- Then college scholarships/admissions became the prize
- Then people began a cycle of investing/reinvesting

And here we are.

It all started when we wanted to "save money" by having weak school sports and competitive club sports.

This is so sad. When I was a senior at Duke I visited Rodney at Hillside HS in Durham for a paper in a journalism class. The man looked like Adonis but had a warm soul and a lovely smile. Had a rough go the last several years following an accident that paralyzed him. May his memory be a blessing.
