It was Giyu who put the bamboo muzzle on Nezuko.

When I read in the fanbook that it was Giyu who put the bamboo muzzle on Nezuko, I couldn’t help but laugh. I found myself wondering why I hadn’t noticed it while reading.🤔

While the two of them were unconscious, Giyu must have laid them down, and made sure Nezuko wouldn’t get cold by putting her fallen haori back on her. Her outer garment had likely slipped off during her struggle with Tanjiro, so he probably picked it up for her.

In the Hashira Training Arc as well, when Tanjiro was knocked unconscious by Sanemi, Giyu placed his own treasured haori under his head as a pillow. From these small, unassuming moments, you catch glimpses of how well he was brought up—or rather, of his kindness—and it leaves you feeling oddly warm.☺️

Now, there’s a bit of debate about that bamboo piece: one theory says he cut bamboo to make it, while another suggests he used a bamboo water flask he already had.

However, in the snowy mountain scene, no bamboo grove is depicted, and it’s hard to imagine Giyu making the poor decision to leave them and go cut bamboo when he had no idea when Nezuko might wake up. With that in mind, the latter theory feels more natural.

In other words, perhaps he simply made a hole in his own bamboo flask and used the cord he had to create an improvised gag. It’s a slightly surreal image, but not entirely implausible. After all, he was carrying rope during the Natagumo Mountain incident.

After knocking Nezuko unconscious, he lays the two of them side by side, dresses her, makes and fits the gag, and watches over them from the shade of a tree until they wake. Then, when they regain consciousness, he tells them his name, leaves them with the crucial warning not to expose her to sunlight—and departs.

…You can’t help but think, what a good person he is. It’s honestly amazing that he would do so much for children he had just met.

Incidentally, speaking of bamboo, I’m reminded of the time Yushiro called Nezuko “shikome.” This term doesn’t simply mean “ugly woman,” but can also refer to a grotesque demon dwelling in the underworld.

This comes from a story recorded in the Kojiki. When Izanagi fled from the land of the dead, he threw a comb to hinder his pursuers (the Yomotsu-shikome). The comb transformed into bamboo shoots, and while they stopped to devour them, he managed to escape. There are plenty of things to nitpick in the story, but that’s mythology for you.

Bamboo shoots eventually grow into bamboo. In other words, there’s an interpretation that overlaps the “shikome” who eats bamboo shoots with Nezuko, who holds a bamboo tube in her mouth.

Of course, this is just one interpretation and not official canon. Still, it’s interesting to think about, isn’t it? Perhaps there was some intention behind choosing “bamboo,” rather than just any piece of wood, for what Nezuko carries.
