Activists from Jackson County advocated for their community Monday night. Sarah Sutherland, a coordinator for Stop the South Jackson Rock Quarry who spoke first at the commissioners meeting. She urged the commissioners to think about the environmental impacts of the quarry.

Those is yellow shirts are here to protest the possible approval of a rock quarry in South Jackson.

The Jackson County Commissioners meeting is Monday, Nov. 18.

At this meeting a vote will be conducted to approve the construction of a Vulcan granite quarry.

Ahead of this meeting my team and I will be reporting on community efforts to stop the quarry.

My final stop of the afternoon was Rosie and the Ratdogs performance. Their hardcore sound shook-up the quiet streets of Boulevard. This is the bands second time performing at this location.

Athens-Clarke County Police Department has been patrolling the streets of Normaltown keeping pedestrians and bikers safe.

The Speech and Hearing Clinic in collaboration with @universityofga has a booth set up on Lyndon Avenue. The clinic is providing free earplugs and resources for Porchfest attendees.

“It’s a hot one today,” says Tattoo Logic’s Mia Hill. October 2023 was the hottest October on record and 2024 is exhibiting similar trends. Due to factors such as climate change and La Niña, this year is particularly warm. The temp. will reach a high of 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tattoo Logic is a local band composed of UGA students. Their performance on Chase Street draws a large crowd jamming out to the jazzy and soulful music. Their set ranges from popular covers like “Murder on the Dance Floor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor to upbeat originals.

Walking and biking from venue to venue is highly encouraged. Porchfest might be one of the few times there are more bicycles than cars on the road. Casie Legett, a Porchfest attendee says she prefers to bike during Porchfest to avoid having to park.

The Indie South vendor market is a new addition to Porchfest. It is located on the corner of North Chase and Boulevard Street and will run until 5 p.m. “I try to do all the Indie South big markets, anything community oriented,” said Sam Watson owner of Sam Watson Illustrations.

I arrived at my first performance of the afternoon Nicholas Mallis and the Borealis and watched the crowd slowly build. “I want to introduce some of my best friends” said Mallis as he named his band members.

Pooches at Porchfest:
Porchfest is an all outdoor and dog friendly event guaranteeing you’ll spot a few furry friends. The Athens Boo-le-Bark on the Boulevard is today at 4:30 p.m. This event features a dog costume parade and contest.

The sixth annual Athens Historic Porchfest is this Sunday, Oct. 20. The event will take place from noon to 8 p.m. and will feature over 200 musical acts. Porchfest is a staple event in the Athens community.
