After more than 20 years of sitting across the table from families, I've learned something that changed the way I think about wealth.
Most people measure financial success by investment performance.
I don't.
I've learned that the hardest financial decisions are rarely about investments.
They're about life.
When can we retire?
Should we convert to a Roth IRA?
How should we handle equity compensation?
Can we afford the vacation home?
Should we help our kids buy a house?
How do we reduce taxes without sacrificing our long-term goals?
None of those decisions happen in isolation.
Taxes affect investments.
Investments affect retirement.
Retirement affects estate planning.
One decision often changes five others.
That's why I don't start with portfolios.
I start with one question: What is this money supposed to do for your life?
Once that answer becomes clear, the investment strategy, tax strategy, and retirement strategy all have a purpose.
Because I've learned that financial success isn't measured by whether you beat the market.
It's measured by whether your money preserves the freedom to choose the life you want.
That's what you'll find here.
The S&P 500 may be a useful benchmark. It just isn’t the benchmark for your life.
The better question: is your money preserving the choices that matter most to you?
That’s the idea behind my latest Money Decision Lab essay. See the link below for the full essay.

“Uncorrelated”… until it isn’t.
Credit spreads just broke a 2-year downtrend.
Private credit isn’t immune , it’s just lagged.
Delayed marks ≠ less risk.
Illiquidity always feels great, right until you need the exit.
Why do you think you’re getting paid more?

“Time in the market > timing the market.”
Cool slogan. Terrible risk strategy.
Real investors manage #risk.
Tourists ride it out.

Is the S&P 500 flashing a warning signal?
Tariffs, hot inflation, and a failed breakout at the 200-day moving average.
Blindly buying this dip is not a strategy.

@SJosephBurns@RyanDetrick This is what typically happens, but in those previous periods, investors were mostly washed out of their equity holdings. Today, investors are actually still holding very high levels of equities.
This time may be different.
