@latimes Please read Eileen: The Making of George Orwell, by Sylvia Topp, published three years before Wifedom. It contains all the same material plus many more facts about the brilliant Eileen and her great influence on Orwell’s writing
Norway is using a £1 trillion + wealth fund to cut energy bills for ordinary people
They built that fund over many years by taxing the oil giants profits at 78%
The Tories even now can’t wait to end the windfall tax for their fossil fuel pals
There is another way
@Orwell_Society What a difference from the overgrown gravesite I discovered in 2012! You can see the sad photo I took in my biography of Eileen. Thanks so much, Brian.
@garyalikivi@Orwell_Society My book, Eileen: The Making of George Orwell, is the first detailed accounting of Eileen’s short life and her great support of and influence on Orwell’s work. They fell in love the night they met, and he understood immediately how important she would become in his life and work.
@djtaylorwriter@TheOrwellPrize@Orwell_Society Peter was helping me with my biography of Eileen long after he had retired from other work. I always appreciated his long informative emails, along with updates on his own life. His constant encouragement was a tremendous inspiration for me. I’m so sorry to hear this news.

I bought Sylvia's book and really look forward to reading it. It seems that the familiar scenario of a woman sacrificing her own potential success is applicable... Sad that Covid 19 meant that the launch had to be postponed, but it has had some very positive reviews.
A terrific event yesterday at @TheWord_UK in South Shields.
A belated launch of the book about Orwell's first wife "Eileen:The Making of George Orwell" with the author @SylviaTopp as well as Richard Blair, Eileen and George's adopted son.

@FrankmcnallyIT I just read your article about the influence of Orwell's wife Eileen on his novel 1984. My biography, Eileen: The Making of George Orwell, examines her further influence and also describes the history of her O'Shaughnessy family in Ireland. Have you read read it?
During her Tyneside researches for her great biography 'Eileen: The Making of George Orwell' we had the pleasure of accompanying @sylviatopp to Cullercoats, to see the memorials to Winslow Homer and the artists' colony.

@dianjo@nevclay It’s so exciting for me to know that people can now easily find Eileen’s gravesite, looking so well-tended. That’s what Orwell would have wanted, after he planted a rose at her grave in 1946.
Thanks to @nevclay who suggested we went to this event, and with whom I'd paid a visit to Eileen's grave at St Andrews Cemetery, West Jesmond in Newcastle recently. When Sylvia first went there it was very hard to find the neglected and overgrown grave, but it's now well tended.
@Orwell_Society Thank you so much for reminding people about this article. It was my first published piece after I became interested in researching Eileen and Orwell.
Now the successful author of 'Eileen: The Making of George Orwell', @sylviatopp found difficulties on her way.
In April 2012, ten years ago, she reported on her attempt to visit Barnhill, former island home of George Orwell.

It was thrilling for me to see Eileen’s gravesite all spruced up, since when I first discovered it in 2012 it had been neglected for over 50 years. Many more details can be found in my biography, Eileen: The Making of George Orwell.
