ముస్లిం స్నేహితుడు చెప్పాడు:

"దీక్షితులు గారు, ఈ రాత్రి రజాకార్లు మెట్టుగూడ ప్రాంతంలో హిందూ కుటుంబాల మీద దాడి చేయాలనుకుంటున్నారు. మీరు
జాగ్రత్తగా ఉండండి ..."

నాన్న ఇంటికి వస్తూనే చెప్పారు.

"ఈ రాత్రికి మనం మన ఇల్లు వదిలేస్తున్నాం. అంతా సవ్యంగా జరిగితే తిరిగి మన ఇంటికి వస్తాం. లేదంటే లేదు. ...!!"

తెలంగాణ అంతా రజాకార్ల
దురాగతాలతో అట్టుడికిపోతోంది.
వేలాది హిందువుల కుటుంబాలు బలైపోతున్నాయి...

నిద్రలోనే నరికివేయబడిన వాళ్ళు
వేలల్లో ఉన్నారు. .
హిందువులు ఎక్కడ ఉన్నా రజాకార్ల
దాడి వార్తలతో భయపడి పోతున్నారు.
నిజాం ప్రభుత్వమే రజాకార్లను పోషిస్తోందన్న ప్రచారంతో హిందూ కుటుంబాలు వణికిపోతున్నాయి...

అప్పుడు మేం మెట్టుగూడలో ఉండేవాళ్ళం.
సాయంత్రం అయ్యేసరికి ఇళ్ళల్లో తలుపులు వేసుకుని బితుకు బితుకు మంటూ ఉండేవాళ్ళం.
నాన్న రైల్వేలో పని చేసేవారు.
నాన్నకి మంచి మిత్రులు అన్ని మతాల్లోనూ ఉండేవాళ్ళు.

అమ్మ భయపడిపోయింది. కానీ, అమ్మకి ధైర్యం చెప్పగల వయసున్న పెద్ద పిల్లని
మా కుటుంబంలో నేనే. 15 ఏళ్ల వయసులో ఉన్న నేనే అమ్మకి, నా తరువాత పుట్టిన నలుగురు తమ్ముళ్లు,చెల్లెళ్లకి భరోసా ఇవ్వాలి.

"ఎలా నాన్నా..?" అని అడిగాను నాన్నని.

యోగాసనాల శక్తి నాన్నకి చాలా శక్తిని ఇచ్చేది. ఆయన ధైర్య వంతుడు.
కొంచెం చీకటి పడగానే మా ఇంటి వెనకాల గోడవతల ఉన్న జాడీల ఫాక్టరీలో దాక్కుందాం అన్నారు నాన్న.
కానీ ఆ ఫ్యాక్టరీ యజమానులు ఈ రజాకార్లకు భయపడి గేట్లు మూసేశారు కదా !

నాన్న ఒక ఐడియా ఇచ్చారు !

మా ఇంటి వెనుక గోడ మీదనుంచి ఫ్యాక్టరీ ఆవరణలోకి నేను ముందు దూకాను. అమ్మని, ఆఖరి పిల్ల (పుట్టి కొన్ని రోజులే అయింది)తో పాటు మెల్లగా దించారు. తరువాత మిగతా పిల్లలు అందర్నీ దించారు.
అక్కడ నుంచి మళ్లీ ఒక నేలమాళిగ లోకి అందరం దిగిపోయాం - నాన్న తప్ప.
అంతా చీకటి. లాంతరు తీసుకెళ్లాం. కానీ వెలుతురు తగ్గించేశాం.
ఆ నేల మాళిగలో ఆ రాత్రి ... భయం... వణుకు ... ప్రతి చిన్న శబ్దానికీ ఉలిక్కి పడుతూ …. తెల్ల వారుతుందా? …
రేపు సూర్యోదయం చూస్తామా ?...

ఉండుండి మా చెల్లెలు ఏడుస్తోంది.
"ఏడవకే, రజాకార్లు వింటారు.." అని దాన్ని సముదాయిస్తున్నాను...

బయట నాన్న, ఇంకొంతమంది పక్క ఇళ్ల మగవాళ్ళు ఇళ్ల కి తాళాలు వేసి, కత్తులు పట్టుకొని చీకటిలో కాపలా కాస్తున్నారు..

అర్థరాత్రి ... అకస్మాత్తుగా … కేకలు, అరుపులు ...
"మారో... మారో..."
ఉలిక్కి పడ్డాం…
అమ్మకి ధైర్యం చెబుతూ నేను, నాకు ధైర్యం చెబుతూ అమ్మ ... !
బయట ఏమవుతోందో తెలీదు.
"మారో ...సాలా ..."
వెన్నులోంచి వణుకు ... రేపు మీద ఆశ. అంతలో రేపు ఇక ఉండదన్న బెంగ ... !

కేకలు తగ్గాయి.. అలాగే ఆ కటిక నేల మీద సొమ్మసిల్లి పడిపోయాం.

తెల్లవారాక నాన్నచెప్పారు - "రజాకార్లు వచ్చి మనమంతా ఊరొదిలి పోయామనుకొని, పక్క వీధిలో ఇళ్లు తగలబెట్టి పోయారు."

పక్కింటివాళ్ళు వచ్చి మమ్మల్ని బయటికి తీశాక, సూర్యోదయం చూశాక,
‘హమ్మయ్య’ అని ఊపిరి పీల్చుకున్నాం.
అది ఆ రోజు వరకే.

కానీ, నిజమైన ఆశ, ధైర్యం తెలంగాణలోని మా లాంటి లక్షలాది హిందూ కుటుంబాల్లో మొగ్గ తొడిగింది మాత్రం ఆ సెప్టెంబరు 17 న మాత్రమే.
ఇప్పటికీ నేను వైద్యసేవలు అందించ గలుగుతున్నా, ‘రజాకార్’ మాట వింటే మాత్రం ఆ రోజులు గుర్తుకొచ్చి ఒళ్ళు జలదరిస్తుంది.

అందుకే, సర్దార్ వల్లభ్ భాయ్
పటేల్ ని తలుచుకోకుండా ఉండలేం.
