Two of the best ways to understand what Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa is doing vis-à-vis the SDF are these two; the rest are details:

According to both SDF and Syrian sources, al-Sharaa insisted that Abdi take a position in Damascus. Remember Abdi’s insistence that he wanted to remain in the Kurdish areas? Things ultimately went al-Sharaa’s way and a rather underwhelming position!

SDF integration, especially at the political level, though not the cultural level, is really about the present. It does not guarantee that this arrangement will become permanent, nor does it provide a timeline for what may happen a few years down the road. In other words, there are no long-term guarantees built into the integration.

Kurdish journalist Lamar Arkhandi from northern Syria, to Kan News on why the Kurds announced disbanding their forces and integrating into al-Sharaa's government:

The integration runs through international agreements sponsored by the U.S. and France, and carries broad international backing. She said it benefits Kurdish forces and legitimate Kurdish rule, and blocks Turkey from finding a pretext to brand the Kurds as terrorists, attack them, and seize their land. With Syria drifting toward anarchy, she said the deal may shield Kurdish areas from jihadist groups seeking any opening to expand.
