i guess it's a similar backlash to pixel art in old indie games and overly cinematic anime. if the criticism is that it's lazy shorthand for "I'm cool and in the know" then all you can do is be more intentional about these choices

i don't make lowpoly models (retro visuals) to evoke a sense of nostalgia in particular, but because it lets me make a lot of models quickly

but if you've already committed to low poly and lowres textures, your visual references are all going to be old ass games, so what're you gonna do!
