It's important to remember that "technology influencers" can be bad role models. Many encourage people to be "fans of technology" instead of actual developers of technology.

The market absolutely needs short-sellers and those yelling about them are almost always yelling self-serving conspiracy theory nonsense (see Owen Lamont’s work for example). Those seeking to restrict them are generally doing worse.
But short-sellers do not have to be net short. Equitizing short insights is allowed. Being short the equity risk premium is a hard way to prosper long term (and has been particularly hard in this long-running equity bull market).
I believe the legendary @RealJimChanos excelled at this for decades (Jim?).
