@watamelon23@goodbyesugargrl@fishgirl1952@DiamondEyesFox Hypothetically if you came across an injured deer (while strapped) thatโs suffering and barely alive would you put it out of its misery or would you walk past it and let it scream out in pain until it dies a slow death.
I see some similarities between the 'dad who stepped up' discourse and the 'downie' discourse that we've seen over the last two days. I think there's a distinction to be made between making the best out of an imperfect situation which is all well and good and this impulse to glorify the imperfect situation as perfect.
A blended family can be a wonderful thing and a happy home filled with love and respect, but its at best making lemonade out of lemons where each partner expected to have a single partner who would be the parent of all their children. Step-parantage isn't some awful fate, but it's, at best, a half-step degraded dynamic from that ideal.
I noticed something similar with the Downs Syndrome/Abortion discourse yesterday. There's a distinction between recognizing that a couple in that situation is being tested by God and is in a horrible position that no one would want to be in (and humbling ourselves and remembering that: there, but for the grace of God, go I) and getting on your high horse to say 'actually having a disabled kid who will never be able to be independent even after you die, and you'll go to your grave wondering if they'll be okay and taken care of is actually a blessing and so wholesome chungus!!
No, it's not. It's a burden and it's a test from God. I find it disgusting to see people pass judgement on others for their choices in this matter. You will not stand before God and answer for their sins (if it even is one, im Muslim) - they will.
That being said, the couple at the center of that discourse is demonic and evil and disgusting and repugnant. Some may think for their choice to terminate their pregnancy and they're entitled to that opinion. I don't think they're evil subhuman morally defective freaks for that. That's an impossible choice that I truly wouldn't wish on anyone. They are disgusting, subhuman, morally defective freaks who should be pilloried because of their repugnant impulse to put up a camera, document what should be a private solemn (perhaps even shameful) decision, and put it up for public consumption and financial gain repleate with millennial 'The Office'-coded look-to-camera 'welp folks, this obviously isn't what we were hoping for'
When he did that, my blood ran cold and I recognized that I had just witnessed evil.
@KurnatowskiV@KeithWoodsYT All the tradcath larpers saying how much of a blessing downies are and that they are bundles of joy while never having experienced raising one themselves. Just look at the tweet Keith quoted and the general discussion surrounding it right now.
Thought we moved past the whole โyou support eugenics, youโre a nazi!โ argument from the right, but alas here we are. I wouldnโt ever abort my child but I can understand why someone would in that circumstance. The TradCathโข larp is getting out of hand.
I really liked both Obsession and Backrooms, but I suspect the latter will have the longer shelf life. Obsession was just a solid and well-acted genre exercise that got lucky because it managed to actually play into contemporary "gender war" anxieties in a way that would not instantaneously alienate either sex, but when the dust settles I think most folks will realize that it isn't much more than an exceptionally good Tales from the Crypt episode (No shame! You could do much worse!). Backrooms, OTOH, actually feels like patient zero for the cinematic arrival of a new(ish) horror subgenre.
@ArthurKolchak Obsession was fun and able to appeal to a larger audience than Backrooms. I actually enjoyed Backrooms more but I donโt think itโs for everyone, and thatโs what makes it interesting.
@janusZer0 More difficult if you donโt live in a big city. Also engagement on this app seems to be a lot worse than it used to be. I actually met my girlfriend of 3 years on this app though so Iโm thankful for that.
Chalamet killed the triple irony poisoned nihilism of Gen Z.
We're going to take ourselves seriously, be ambitious, and create art we stand behind.
