Guess who’s one of the main writers for this series?
Also: you have NO IDEA how much WORK is involved with indie stuff until you are up to your eyebrows in things that make it feel like zero progress is actually being done bc it’s business stuff 😭

@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy + which is calling out the people who are hiring the people whl are half-assing the jobs which will put pressure to not hire them again. If a gear company is bad, people WILL know and they WILL go under. Same market pressure here, the crappy contractors will stop being hired.
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy Motorcycle gear is in a weird gray area where aside from DOT certs in helmets its the wild west. So its more word of mouth regarding issues unless theres a ban. Innovations are made in pools of blood. The OP is making a point and taking time to make sure things are safer +
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy You dense… look. Heres what I was trying to get at. Hes finding a problem, and he’s fixing it and adding pressure for people to do it right the first time. Thats how the airbags were made. Someone saw a problem and put pressure on the big names to pick them up, whcih spread word
@FlamingkittyU@lumpylemon@theguardrailguy The airbags I mentioned had an over 90% reduction in whiplash-related injuries and fatalities at speeds over 200mph, they’re designed for were stress tested on motocross tracks. They are now mandatory in pro racing. But that little sliver still occur, its just drastically reduced
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy No its not comparable. The inital airbags with the rip cord trugger for the gas canisfer were designed for track bikes used in motocross which are WAY taller than a street bike, and specifically cruisers are just too short for the original cord. They make shorter cord options now
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy An INJURY is not the same as a death! No direct links between some idiot on a stumpy harley with ape hangers or something taking a turn too low or a knee dragger - which is an illegal stunt btw - popping the rip cord and getting a cracked rib - which is rarer than rare!
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy No! They work as intended! The ones that are outdates have a singular primary issue via the rip cord being too long for low-rider cruiser-style bikes and in RARE OCCASIONS getting caught in the rear wheel on such bikes when turning at extreme angles, they’re for sport/adventures!
@FlamingkittyU@lumpylemon@theguardrailguy Yeah, exactly. And i am mostly talking about specifically airbags for motorcycles, which were developed because a major flaw was discovered that caused a lot of injuries and someone took the time to figure out a solution. Kevlar padding only does so much and doesnt protect necks.
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy Dude i was talking about motorcycle airbags. Its newer tech riffing off of airline auto-inflate life jackets. They have hugely reduced fatalities its just because it is literally around your ribs, if its too small or you don’t allow for tolerance for expansion it can break a rib.
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy It is a SPECIFIC airbag vest - the Hi-lyte turtle - that still has those issues but people get them because they aren’t computerized and dont need charging. Which is stupid, because they’re outdated and waaaay more pricy.
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy Dude. Listen to me. The ISSUE is that people get the wrong size OR THE ONE WITH THE RIP CORD THAT GETS CAUGHT ON CERTAIN STYLES OF BIKES DUE TO IT BEING TOO LONG and it falsely deploys OR when it deploys the bad fit - generally too small - causes added injury. User error.
@honestmabe Little dude gets a job at a sex doll plant. Im not joking. The details are a bit fuzzy bc its been a few years but little dude legit starts making sex dolls.
+ stop to all injuries, which means that there will still be issues to find. But again. Motorcycle gear. Improvements. They’d be better if people were more willing to give them a shot and stopped with enabling the rip-cord ones that legit have a flaw where they get caught in 🛞.
Today’s twitter antics for me:
Getting into an argument about how a rapidly improving and not commonly used piece of motorcycle gear - the airbag vest, bc they figured out how to get airbags to work on bikes - causes some injuries bc of poor fitting. Bc its keeping people alive.
+ reduces a MAJOR issue that the better helmets had for YEARS where whiplash or a bad knock could ram the lower back edge into your neck hard enough to sever it in certain highly specific situations. But the trade off? Otherwise safest helmets.
It’s improvement, not a total+
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy Again, its broken ribs OR YOU DIE OR HAVE A SERIOUS SPINAL OR NECK INJURY! Its a MOTORCYCLE airbag, if you set it off you’re going fast and hard enough for you to be THROWN or get serious whiplash that threatens your life from the aforementioned whiplash!
It’s this:
@lumpylemon@FlamingkittyU@theguardrailguy Its not a COMMON issue and it happens due to improper fitting, IE getting a too-small vest, and landing at certain angles. Its a car airbag. Wrapped around your entire torso. Often with additional kevlar and made to be paired with same-brand jackets. Car airbags ALSO hurt people!
