I'm hearing reports of stalk rot starting to show up in corn fields in Southeast Nebraska. Irrigated corn stalks that still have some green color are starting to go over. Something to keep an eye out for ahead of what will already be an early harvest.
A recent study on farmland ownership out of Iowa had some very interesting results. It seems reasonable to assume other Midwest states would have similar statistics. A few of the highlights below.
84% of IA farmland is owned free of debt.
2/3 of IA farmland is owned by people aged 65 years or above.
37% of IA farmland is owned by people aged 75 years or above.
46% of IA farmland is owned by women.
58% of IA farmland is leased.
51% of leases are cash rent of flex cash rent.
-When to irrigate and how much
-What amount and types of crop insurance should you buy
-When to sell your grain
-What carbon credit program to enroll in
The list could go on and on.
As a farm manager, I hope this will only make me better and not replace my job!
I find the rapid development of AI tools very interesting but I have yet to find many uses in my daily work.
I believe we will see a day when AI replaces most of our decision-making on farms.
-What crop to plant
-What hybrid/variety to plant and when
-Best seeding rate
-How much, when, and where to apply fertilizer
-How many and what types of weeds, insects, and diseases do you have in the field
-What herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide to spray
Read a rather concerning stat today.
According to USDA data, the U.S. lost approximately 50 million acres of farmland from 2000 to 2022. Over 6,000 acres a day.
This makes a bullish case for long term farmland ownership.
@chernobelskiy Farmland would be worth considering. If I can't help him get exactly what he is looking for I can probably intro him to someone else in the industry that can.
South Dakota is taking action to restrict non-US parties from buying farmland in the state. It will be interesting to see how this goes as other states may consider doing the same.
