Sloth bears cannot outrun tigers or climb to escape, so they rely on frontal, defensive aggression to survive encounters. By standing bipedal, vocalizing, and bluff-charging, the bear actively deters an attack causing the tiger to back off rather than risk injury from powerful claws.
