Forced out of Rwanda at age 2, he grew up a refugee, faced discrimination, lost his father, dropped out of school, and received no family support to continue his education.

At 22, he joined a rebel movement in Uganda as an intelligence officer.

At 28, that movement overthrew the Ugandan government.

At 36, he helped lead a rebel force that took power in Rwanda in 1994.

As Stephen Kinzer notes in A Thousand Hills, “In the minds of many Tutsi exiles, they learned a lesson that: they were alone and friendless, and that whatever they wished to accomplish, they would have to accomplish without help.”

This history matters.
