Junta airstrikes kill over 200 at resistance-run POW camps, Myanmar Witness reports

Targeted airstrikes by the Myanmar military junta against detention facilities holding prisoners of war (POWs) and their family members have left more than 200 people dead or injured across Arakan, Shan, and Kayah States, according to an investigative report released Thursday by Myanmar Witness.

The report documented a series of aerial attacks carried out between October 2024 and March 2026, in which junta aircraft targeted seven detention facilities operated by anti-junta resistance forces in conflict-affected areas.

Myanmar Witness said forensic analysis of digital evidence and physical remains from strike sites identified human remains of detainees restrained with iron shackles, remnants of barred detention structures, and impact craters consistent with heavy aerial munitions.

The deadliest attack occurred on March 8, 2026, when a junta airstrike struck a detention facility in Ann Township, Arakan State, killing 116 prisoners.

The report also examined an earlier strike on September 9, 2024, in Maungdaw Township, where a former Border Guard Force facility used as a detention site was bombed, killing more than 50 detainees.

Further analysis documented a January 18, 2025, airstrike on a facility in Yanchaung area of Mrauk-U Township that housed POW family members, killing 28 prisoners and injuring 25 others.

Other recorded attacks included a September 8, 2024, strike on a detention camp in Pauktaw Township that killed 20 people and injured 15, as well as a January 20, 2026, air raid on the Chaungtu facility in Kyauktaw Township that killed 21 POWs and wounded 30 others.

The report also documented an October 28, 2024, attack on a POW facility in Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, which killed 12 detainees and injured 60, and a March 5, 2026, strike on a facility in Mese Township, Kayah State, that killed five women and children related to captured personnel and injured 20 others.

Myanmar Witness said that, apart from the Maungdaw incident, which occurred during active fighting, the remaining six detention facilities in Ann, Pauktaw, Nawnghkio, Mrauk-U, Kyauktaw, and Mese Townships were targeted despite no active ground battles taking place nearby.

Rights monitors said the junta’s increasing use of air power against detention facilities and other non-military targets amid widespread battlefield losses raises serious concerns over violations of international humanitarian law.
