A little bit of chronology :

1. July 2023 : Transnet awards ICTSI owned by Philippines billionaire Razom 25 year concession to run Pier 2 Durban under 51/49 % split.

2. Last quarter of 2023 Transnet is faced with equipment failures leading to backlog at the ports, including Durban.

3. January 11 2024 : Labour Unions make demands for International Container Terminal Services to not institute any job cuts during the 25 year concession period.

4. January 12 2024 : some of the losing bidders for the Port of Durban concession which include DP World , Cosco , APM , Global Port Services, Remgro in partnership with Abu Dhabi Ports , China Harbor Engineering in partnership with Grindrod Freight have decided to challenge the award of the concession to ICTS asking Transnet to provide the basis for the award.

The Port of Durban is going ro continue being rendered inefficient for political and business reasons. Instead of capacitating the state to run Transnet they are busy destroying so they can privatise. Another interesting fact is that Transnet's Board Chairman is from Anglo American and also another member of the Transnet Board is State Security Advisor Sydney Mufamadi, reporting directly to Cyril Ramaphosa.

As was the case with Tongaat in which BRP had selected the Norwegian government funded billionaire to take over the company. That was later challenged by the losing bidders and on 11 January 2024 a consortium that includes Robert Gumede and a Pakistani sugar giant which has got the likes of Coca Cola, Nestle, and Pepsi as its key client base and BlackRock as a shareholder.

These "challenges" are not competitive in the true sense of fair business BUT rather senior political leaders doing the bidding for big corporate companies who provide counter and better incentives for the politicians.
