“My mom’s voice is in that song. And she would’ve loved to have seen all of this. She’d be so proud and I think she’d also be really stoked that she’s now singing in every stadium every night.”

Last night my Uber driver saw me staring at my phone and asked why. I said I was figuring out what to text back. He laughed and said, “You’re texting like you’re scared of her.” Then he pointed out that every message I sent sounded like I was asking permission—“if you’re free,” “does that work,” “maybe?” He told me back in his day, he just made plans: “Dinner Friday at 7. I’ll pick you up.” I told him that doesn’t work now, and he asked, “Did you even try?” So I tried it. I texted: “Coffee Thursday at 3. Meet me at Stumptown.” No questions. No hesitation. 6 minutes later she said yes. I told him the next week and he smiled: “Confidence isn’t rude. Uncertainty is.” Sometimes the best dating advice comes from people who figured it out before apps existed. Stop asking permission—just make a plan.
When i was 22 I went on a date and after about an hour and a half I got the sense that we weren’t a match.
But the guy reminded me of my friend, so I told him and asked if I could introduce him to her.
He said yes, they hit it off instantly, and they got married a few years later.
Be generous. Hook your friends up.
They may not be right for you, but they’re right for someone else.
