The NSA built a tool that can take apart compiled software even when you do not have its source code.

Then it put the tool on GitHub. Free. Open source. For anyone.

It is called Ghidra. 88,700 stars. Apache-2.0.

The NSA used it internally for over a decade before releasing it at the RSA security conference in 2019.

Here is what it does:

Every app you use is built from code. When the developer ships it, that code gets turned into a file your device can run. You cannot read it.

Ghidra reads it. It takes that file apart and shows you what the software actually does. Every function. Every piece of data it touches. Every place it sends it.

Security researchers use it to study malware. Companies use it to find holes in their own software. Governments use it to analyze software from other countries.

The commercial alternative is IDA Pro. It is a paid tool. Ghidra has a built-in decompiler. Free.

Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Supports a wide range of formats and processors. Write your own plugins in Java or Python.

One honest note. This is a professional tool built for security researchers. If you do not work with compiled software, you will not use it daily.

The tool a spy agency built for itself is now free for everyone.
