En 1978, el cantante Ralfi Pagán voló a Barranquilla para promocionar su música. Nunca regresó con vida. Durante su estancia en la ciudad, le escribió a su madre contándole que las presentaciones prometidas no aparecían. Días después, terminó asesinado...

El viaje había comenzado a torcerse desde su llegada en marzo de ese año. Al ver que los empresarios no daban la cara y que nadie lo contactaba, Ralfi intentó salvar la gira consiguiendo entrevistas radiales por su propia cuenta. La trampa se cerró cuando unos hombres vinculados al promotor fueron a buscarlo directamente a su hotel con la promesa de una supuesta presentación. Según relató su hermano Ángel, lo condujeron hasta una playa, donde lo asesinaron y abandonaron su cuerpo.

Pagán había nacido en Nueva York y residía en Los Ángeles, era una de las voces más particulares del latin soul, género en el que grabó cuatro álbumes para Fania Records entre 1969 y 1975. Sobre su muerte, Larry Harlow ofreció una versión diferente, según el pianista, antes de una presentación Ralfi reclamó su pago, pero el promotor le ofreció un kilo de cocaína en lugar de dinero. Al negarse, el sujeto sacó un arma y lo obligó a subir a cantar. Finalizado el show, se lo llevaron a un barranco y lo arrojaron por un acantilado.

Por su parte, el periodista barranquillero Gilberto Marenco sostuvo que Ralfi se hospedó en el hotel Royal, frente a la Escuela de Bellas Artes, sobre la carrera 54 y a media cuadra del Hotel El Prado. Tras varios días sin noticias, el promotor reapareció y le dijo que sólo había una fiesta privada. Según Marenco, el cadáver apareció dentro de un automóvil incendiado en uno de los accesos del puente que cruza la Circunvalar con la carrera 46, conocida como vía al mar, cuando todavía no se había desarrollado el corredor universitario.

​El investigador Sergio Santana recoge todas estas versiones en su libro ‘Sobre una tumba una rumba’, que recomiendo leer, en el también incluye la versión de la familia, que desmintió cualquier vínculo del artista con el mundo de las drogas. El crimen jamás fue resuelto y, hasta el día de hoy, no existe certeza documental sobre el destino final de sus restos. Ralfi Pagán tenía apenas 31 años cuando le arrebataron la vida.

“We spoke about Lamine Yamal before the match. Of course we did. You cannot prepare to play Barcelona and pretend he isn’t there.

We showed the players clips. We discussed his left foot, the way he stops with the ball, the way he waits for the defender to shift his weight. We told them not to dive in, not to give him the inside, and not to let him isolate someone without support.

One of the players asked, ‘Coach, what if he goes outside?’

I said, ‘Then don’t let him go outside.’

He looked at me and said, ‘So where do you want him to go?’

That was a fair question.

We started well. We scored first, and the stadium was exactly what we wanted it to be. Loud. Hostile. You could barely hear the man beside you.

But against players like that, the atmosphere only helps you until they start enjoying it.

Barcelona equalised, and after half-time Lamine began finding little spaces on the right. One moment he’s waiting. The next, the ball is in our box and Fermin has scored.

Then comes the move everybody is talking about.

I watched it from the technical area. Our defender is trying to stay patient. That’s what we asked him to do. Lamine moves the ball, changes direction, makes him adjust again, and somehow delivers the pass for Gordon.

I turned to my assistant and said, ‘We showed them that exact movement.’

He said, ‘Yes.’

I said, ‘Did we show them how to stop it?’

He didn’t answer.

People watching on television will say the defender should have done better. Maybe. But television makes defending look very simple. You can pause the picture. You can draw an arrow. You can say, ‘Don’t let him do that.’

The defender doesn’t get to pause anything. He has to make a decision while Lamine is making three.

People argue that tricks don’t win the Ballon d’Or, goals do.

I agree that tricks alone don’t win anything. But two assists in a few minutes are not just tricks. Those are goals we’ve conceded.

And he’s 19 years old. That’s what makes it difficult to accept. Not because he’s young and talented. We’ve all seen talented young players.

It’s because he already understands how to control the person defending him. He doesn’t need to be faster than you every time. Sometimes he just needs you to believe he’s about to accelerate.

Afterwards, somebody asked me whether our defenders had been frightened of him.

I said, ‘No. They respected him.’

‘Is there a difference?’

‘Of course. Fear makes you run away. Respect makes you stand your ground.’

I paused and said, ‘Unfortunately, standing your ground against Lamine doesn’t always help either.’

We can be disappointed with the result and still appreciate what we saw. There are nights when a young player reminds you why people come to football stadiums in the first place.
