I’ve lost three family members to drugs, and many Americans know someone personally affected by the drug crisis, which has taken a devastating toll on our country. My vote today on the war powers resolution was about upholding the Constitution, which makes clear that the use of U.S. Armed Forces against foreign adversaries must be authorized by Congress. As I have stated before, the operation to capture Maduro was warranted, but that doesn’t supersede Congress’s Article I oversight and authorization responsibilities. This is not an issue of the validity of these operations; I believe Congress would have supported them, and I would have as well. This is ultimately a constitutional issue, and Congress must fulfill its responsibility to authorize the use of force on behalf of the American people. That is the role the Founders assigned to Congress under the Constitution, and I would have taken this vote regardless of the administration.
