The Inner Turmoil of Nelson Chamisa as he Struggles with Stress and Strategy
Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa is facing considerable challenges, prompting him to consider stepping away from politics. Sources within the CCC have indicated that the recent Sengezo Tshabangu incident has taken a toll on Chamisa's health, leading to stress and depression. He is struggling to cope with the pressures of leadership and internal factional conflicts. Some close associates and family have advised him that a hiatus from active politics could provide him with an opportunity to travel, study, and potentially devise a new political strategy.
It's important to note that Chamisa's persistence in politics appears to be primarily driven by his strong desire for power. In his pursuit of a prominent role in the opposition, Chamisa has been involved in actions that have strained relationships with colleagues, endorsed attacks on potential rivals and their supporters, and failed to meet directives from his Western backers, particularly those at the local US Embassy.
Reports suggest that Chamisa's allies from Zambia have cautioned him that he risks losing support from Western donors unless he can deliver tangible results before the end of the year. Hence, his recent statement expressing readiness to engage in dialogue with ZANU PF may be an attempt to salvage his position. However, many believe that his post-election behavior has already eroded any goodwill ZANU PF might have had towards him.
It's worth recalling that in 2018, President Mnangagwa extended an olive branch to Chamisa by offering him the position of leader of the opposition in Parliament and establishing the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) to facilitate discussions between opposition leaders and contribute to Zimbabwe's rebuilding efforts. Unfortunately, Chamisa declined these opportunities and instead chose a more confrontational approach, ultimately missing significant chances for collaboration as the country moved forward.
Recently, Chamisa introduced what appears to be a self-promotional constitution proposal, echoing his consistent self-focus and a perceived lack of effective leadership skills. This move followed a suggestion from Zambia, further emphasising Chamisa's inability to pivot from his narcissistic tendencies and adapt to changing political landscapes.
